Hyde Park

The Hyde Park in Austin, Texas

Hyde Park History

Established in “the street car era” by Monroe M. Shipe, Hyde Park was one of Austin’s first suburbs. Its flat lands accommodated a number of activities, including horse races, bike races, and state militia camps. It was the original home of the State Fair in 1875, but the Fair was moved to Dallas 9 years later when it began to lose money. The lumber from the old fairground was later used to build the Hyde Park School on Speedway.

The grounds soon became recognized as a resort once Gem Lake was developed and a pavilion was added. The area transformed into a well-established location where people could come to enjoy various forms of entertainment, such as concerts and plays.

Today, Hyde Park still provides such a variety of entertainment to its residents. Residents can take pleasure in a stroll around the neighborhood to the local grocery store or post office. With its convenient location just north of the University of Texas, the neighborhood is very inviting to students and professors looking to make an easy commute to campus.
